Rune Bering

Rune Bering (b.1984) is a Danish artist educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He has exhibited extensively both solo and in group shows in Austria, Belgium, Cuba and Denmark.

Bering’s works Harddisk Archive 1+2 (2020) (graphite, plaster, pigments, gravel, cable tray, heavy duty (trolley) wheels) are represented in Augustenborg Collection. The large disks are archives of an alternative past. Their surface is covered in the imprints of the physical components of discarded digital devices, and future butterfly fossils. The artist understands nature as an ecosystem that is infiltrated by the effects of technology. Here, all technical and organic lifeforms leave cues and traces for their successors to decipher.

Rune Bering is interested in connections between the physical and digital worlds. In addition to their immediate function, media affect our perception of physical nature. If we want to understand the structural changes that are happening in our time and the directions in which we are heading, we must relate to the media that surround us and the underlying logic, which sneaks in through the back door, impacting connections between people, nature and technology. Attempting to understand these correlations can lead to a less black-and-white picture of the concept of sustainability.

In his work, the artist renegotiates established notions of the things with which we surround ourselves inviting us to take a long, hard look at the prevailing ideas about boundaries and divisions between technology and nature. Everything around us is connected and part of nature’s cycle.

Martina Enevold

Martina Enevold is a Danish artist educated as a fashion designer at the The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Enevold holds an MA in Fashion from the Royal College of Art, London.

Enevold’s work, The Trees Declared War (2022) (aluminium mounted on tree, on site outside installation) is represented at Augustenborg Collection. The sculpture is part of a larger project, placing weapon-like structures on trees in various locations of ancient woodland, parks and forests, to allow for personal encounters and interactions for those who may discover them. The weapon is gently wrapped around the tree to serve as protection against potential threats and left there to invite the tree to eventually grow around the object and hold on to the weapon.

Through this work, the artist aims to give agency to the trees, as representatives of nature, and allow them to fight back against the violence performed on them by humans. The artist positions herself as an ally to the trees, against humanity, in a speculative war between species. The goal is not to inflict physical violence, but to use the imagery of violence to pose as a quiet threat, inviting the viewer to consider their own position. The aim of the project is to question assumptions concerning violence, control and ownership over other species as well as the idea of civilised><savage and us><other.

Nina Kleivan

Nina Kleivan works in various artistic media such as photography, painting, video, sculpture and installation. She examines and challenges existential themes such as identity and belonging often using family members as models. Elements from very different contexts and spheres of meaning – realities – appear side by side, objects are scaled up and down in size and unexpected displacements of time and space challenge our accustomed idea of reality. One moment Kleivan zooms in on the smallest detail and the next moment she gives us a bird’s-eye view of the world. Part and whole are intertwined and Kleivan gives the impression that the story can be told and understood in innumerable ways, because meaning, history and identity are constantly changing and can be seen from an infinite number of perspectives. Kleivan was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Kleivan’s work, Unheimlich Swimming (2022) (video and installation) is represented in Augustenborg Collection.

David Risley

David Risley (b. 1972) is an artist, writer and curator. Risley was educated at the Bath School of Art in England. For 20 years he ran the David Risley gallery and did not make art. In Risley’s own words,

“I spent my time with artists, curators, writers – looking, listening, learning. I had presumed that subject matter drives meaning; that the content of a work leads us to its meaning. The more I learned, the less true this appeared to be. My favourite artists, Chardin, Morandi, Neel, Katz, Hammershøi, made paintings almost devoid of content but heavy with meaning. They painted family and friends, the things on their table, everyday life. Contrary to logic, the lack of overt subject matter in these paintings produced the most meaning. I began making watercolour paintings of the things I care about, things I love: family, friends, my surroundings. I remain hopeful that meaning can find its way into these paintings. I am interested in the ontological realm of painting, where and when is the painting happening?”

Risley’s works, Head Store (2021) (oil on linen, artist’s frame, magnetite) and Einer, Tomb of the Diver (2023) (watercolours on silk) are represented at Augustenborg Collection.

Charlie Roberts

Charlie Roberts (b. 1983) receives his creative inspiration from traditional art, pop culture, hiphop, comics, folk art, and artists such as Matisse, Ensor, Florine Stettheimer, etc. He explores across different media, blurring the boundaries of forms, breaking established models for art and creation, with the courage to try to create with new materials, styles and techniques he fills his work with energy and unique expression. Roberts elongates his figures, making them slimmer and giving them seemingly impossibly long limbs; featuring a cast of humans, animals, and hybrid creatures enacting bizarre, surreal scenarios.

Educated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada and Kansas University, he has held more than 40 individual exhibitions and participated in more than 30 group exhibitions around the world. Recent group and solo exhibitions include: “Nature’s bounty,” Galerie Pact, (2024) “Possible Worlds,” Nino Mier, Brussels (2024) “Pathways to Unknown Worlds,” Woaw Gallery, Kiaf Seoul (2024) “Vibrant Escape: An Ode to Summer,” Woaw Gallery, Hong Kong (2023), “Short Stories,” Anna Zorina Gallery, Los Angeles (2023, solo), “Light Sleeper,” Allouche Benias, Athens (2022, solo), “Good to See You,” Golsa, Oslo (2022), Bleeding Edge, Ojiri Gallery, London (2022, solo), “Angels with Dirty Faces,” Ojiri Gallery, London (2022), “Romancing Relevance,” Woaw Gallery, Hong Kong (2022), “Dream Chasers,” Woaw Gallery, Beijing (2021, solo), Sandworm, Woaw Gallery, Wan Chai (2020, solo), Cosmic Hedge, Golsa, Oslo (2019, solo).
